Things to do
Minto is well situated within the rolling countryside of the Scottish Borders. A wealth of historic towns and places of interest are within a short drive including the Abbey towns of Melrose (9 miles), Jedburgh (6 miles) and Kelso (14 miles). Edinburgh is just over an hour away providing many opportunities for sight seeing and visiting the festival. The unspoilt countryside offers many outdoor activities, including walking, cycling and fishing or just peaceful relaxation.
For the golfer, the 21 clubs in the Scottish Borders participating in Freedom of the Fairways are all within easy reach offering an inexpensive way to enjoy some outstanding courses. Minto Golf course is immediately across the road and has received much acclaim, including an award for being the friendliest club in the Scottish Borders.
For the walker, there are many walks within the area, including The Abbeys Way, St. Cuthberts Way (Melrose to Lindisfarne) and the Pennine Way. Bordering the cottages is the pretty Minto Glen and the Minto Hills rising to over 900 feet with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Fatlips castle with an interesting history is just a short stroll from the cottages across the golf course. The Eildon Hills provide a more strenuous climb to 1400 feet and the hills around the beautiful St. Mary's Loch rise to over 2,700 feet and include the magnificent Grey Mare's Tail waterfall.
For the fisherman the River Tweed, flowing through the area, is often called the Queen of the salmon rivers, and the Teviot, which provides first class fishing for brown trout, is less than a mile away.
The area is rich in history and has many castles, towers, keeps and country houses to visit including, Floors Castle, Traquair House, Mellerstain House, Thirlestane Castle, Smailholme Tower, Bamburgh Castle, Hermitage Castle and many more.
The ancient towns of Melrose, Kelso and Jedburgh have old abbeys to visit and many other interesting sights, shops, restaurants and pubs.
The village of Denholm, one and a half miles away offers two pubs serving meals, and small shops. A large Morrisons supermarket is just six miles away in Hawick.
